Welcome to My Personal Page
I am excited to be participating in Hike for Hospice Palliative Care!
Welcome to my personal page! Thank you for taking the time to read this. I am sure that you are all aware just how important this agency is to me. Unfortunately most people, I believe, aren't aware of its existence until they have to face a loved one dying. But once their services are offered, they become a life line of support and understanding to all family members.
When Lynne was first diagnosed with cancer, a hospice volunteer came to our house every week to sit and talk with Lynne. I always left to give them privacy, and because I too needed the break. Lynne often said she looked forward to her visits and she could say things to her that she couldn't to others. This, in itself, was extremely helpful.
When Lynne's cancer spread to her brain, she was then moved to the hospice unit at saint Joseph's hospital. That was her home for the next 6 months. And yes, her volunteer/friend, continued to visit her in the hospital. Lynne sometimes forgot she was coming, but always had a big smile for her when she walked through the door.
After Lynne died, her volunteer recognized that I was in trouble myself. Did not handle loosing everyone well. She called the office and requested that someone come and start visiting/talking with me, because I was alone and my family died 2 years before.
Then entered Steph. She was a awesome lady who helped me want to live again. She listened to my anger fuelled rants and never blinked a eye. She came more than the 3 hours a week agreed to. She came on my birthday, Christmas, new years day - and allowed me to text her daily! She helped me want to be me again. When she suffered a massive heart attack at age 39 and died, 6 months after I met her, I was stunned! Joan was nice enough to bring me to the funeral. Steph gave me the courage and the will to move forward. She helped me be me again without the fear and shame I once felt.
This is what this agency did to help Lynne and myself in our darkest hours. I feel grateful and honoured to be able to help in my small way for Hike For Hospice, and will continue to do so for as long as I can. That you for your time, support, and donations
